史景迁有非常清晰而强烈的问题意识,这从原书名 The Search for modern China就可看出。史景迁的问题是:如果有「现代中国」这回事的话,那么这个名词可以回溯多远而仍能成立?在这个基本层次上,史景迁所思考的问题可说和已故史学家黄仁宇相当接近,因为黄仁宇的主要关注点正在於把中国和欧洲历史相对照,思索为何欧洲式的资本主义没有发生在中国。而所谓资本主义在某种程度上,和现代性(modernity)可说是相通的。而史景迁和黄仁宇两人也都很注重看似细微不起眼的技术细节对历史发展的影响,所以在千端万缕的细节中,拣选、过滤有意义的事件,并将之汇集,与历史的大走向挂钩,那是真的要有小说家的笔法与功力才能毕其功,更何况这本书的英文版还是由 Norton 所出版,是作为大学教科书之用。一本大学教科书能写到兼顾学术性与可读性,在英语世界里,史景迁恐怕是当代第一人了。
本书出版后,已取代徐中约 The Rise of Modern China 而成为在美国大学中国研究的权威著作。本书自明末开场,顺著时代发展变迁一路发展至 1989 年。全书见解透彻,观察入微,不受传统政治史的路径限制,而侧重经济、文化等常民生活之面向。行文叙述尤其生动,极具阅读乐趣!
